 KIM DEMUTH

Geboren in UK. Studium Freie Kunst an der Queensland University of Technology (BA w/ Honours in Visual Arts). Lebt und arbeitet in Brisbane, Australien.

......scroll down for Korean version......

Born in the UK, Demuth continually moved around the world as a child before his family eventually settled in Australia when he was a teenager. he graduated from Queensland University of Technology (Australia) in 1999 with a BA (Honours) in Visual Arts (First Class).

Most of Kim Demuth's practice has been focused upon the notion of escape, as in a way out off where we find ourselves. He never saw visual art as a way out, but more a means to build or create a perceptual route – the act of illusion is a component that has remained in his practice. His works are like a promise that there is 'something' bigger than we will ever know. There is a sense of self consciouse mortality within, drawing on the inevitability of our 'departure' that he feels coexists in turmoil with our desire to 'begin', to start again, ad-infinitum. Although the images acquired are both his own and found, they look nothing like their original state because he manipulates them, often to such a degree, they could be considered digital paintings. But it isn't really about how they are made or where they come from, it is about the result. Whatever medium and way of working he has utilised in the past, it is about placing a sense of belief in an 'otherness' within the viewer. He believes that once one comprehends that they have been vicually tricked then this can be applied to the outer world – we are trapped within an illusion.

 ARTIST STATEMENT

I fell into 'photography' by default in that it was often a component in one way or another of a sculptural, installation based practice. Because I was never trained in photography I have no definitive ideas of it in that sense, which for me means greater autonomy, and it's potentials as a medium are seemingly boundless and open to experimentation. I feel it is only in experimentation that I can enjoy the act of discovery beyond the expected. I use images of both my own but also found, often resourced from old albums that bare little to no trace of there origins. I became interested in vernacular photography from early on as a means of exploring the space/worlds of others, but from a distance. Because there is little other than what we see in an unknown image, we have to contribute our own imagination to it, so I guess I exploit these kinds of photographs for the mystery they possess. My work also possesses a subtle optical effect that encourages the illusion of a visual space, oscillating between 2D and 3D points of perception – it is an inter-space; neither here nor there, an 'in-between world' of sorts. This optical device provides an experience of time suspended; a kind of portal whereby, visually at least, there appears to be a physical presence beyond the usual experience of photographic imagery. I've always wanted to make work that draws upon a sense of the 'real' – the 'here and now' and that of another, perhaps aloof, distant and separate to the conditioned vision that we function with. In my practice, the illusionary photographic image is mainly a way of examining and portraying a reflection of the outer world. Like a distorted mirror, photographic images can stare back and query our own skewed perceptions, not to provide answers, but to encourage questions.
